In the late 19th century Tunisia become a colony under the Third French Republic, before the French conquest of Tunisia, Tunisia had been a province of the Ottoman Empire. Due to defeat of the Second French Empire in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. France saw the opportunity regain their international prestige by invading he North African territory of the declining Ottoman Empire. France maintain control of Tunisia from 1881 to 1956, however, in 1956 Tunisia gained their independence and started formation of the modern state of Tunisia. After Tunisia's independence women gained a significant amount of equal rights and shorten the gender gap in the country.
The historical question that I purpose: What has been the evolution of women rights in the modernizing city of Tunis from precolonial to postcolonial Tunis, in terms of economic, social and cultural rights?
